The more people with the DreamLab app installed, the more calculations we can complete to help cancer research…
Have you been keeping up with all the latest DreamLab news? The app, which uses your phone’s brainpower to crunch data in the fight against cancer, has already racked up 5.9 million calculations – but we’re just getting started.
With World Cancer Day (4 February) encouraging people around the globe to show their support, we’re kicking off the first ever World Cancer Night, and asking thousands more people to hit snooze in the name of science. Here’s what you need to know…
Snooze for science
Every year, World Cancer Day empowers people to stand up to the disease in a variety of ways – whether that’s by actively helping those affected by it, joining nearby activities, or simply by helping to raise awareness.
This year we’re getting in on the action by encouraging as many people as possible to download and use the Vodafone Foundation’s DreamLab app. Why? Because once the sun sets on today’s World Cancer Day, it’s time to get straight into bed and kick off the first ever World Cancer Night!
With DreamLab installed and your head on the pillow, your phone joins thousands of others in the cloud, computing packages of data that help scientists at Imperial College London test how different drugs and foods affect cancerous mutations.
You can find out loads more about the science behind the supercomputing here, but suffice to say: every smartphone using DreamLab at night really does make a difference.
Our target? 10,000 new installs in time for bed. 10,000 extra handsets crunching numbers for 7 hours over World Cancer Night would mean an extra 100,000 additional calculations in the bag – crucial progress in the cancer research process.

But you needn’t just take our word for it. Dr Kirill Veselkov, Assistant Professor in Computational Medicine at Imperial College, believes there’s “no better time to start than World Cancer Day.
“Thanks to our people-powered supercomputing through DreamLab, we have completed our first project phase which has found individual drug combinations that are tailored to patient genetics. We have also identified promising drug candidates for further study.
“Now, we are ready to take the leap into the next phases where we will research effective drug or food combinations in the treatment of cancer. This is a much more complex process and requires even more computing power to crunch tens of millions of calculations – that is why we need smartphone owners to help our research by downloading and using the app each night while they sleep. What better time to start than World Cancer Day?”
So why not join the fight? All you need to do is install the app and hit the hay! For lots more on DreamLab, check out these jargon-busting behind-the-scenes looks…
