We’re thrilled to have been voted the UK’s best network in this year’s Trusted Reviews Awards by you – the people who use our network daily!

It’s the second year in a row we’ve won the honour, showing that our continued investment in our network is paying off across the country. But we’re not resting on our laurels. Here’s everything we’re doing to make things even better…

4G goes further

A few years back we kicked off ‘Project Beacon’, a multi-billion-pound network upgrade programme designed to send our signal even further. That’s now close to completion, with over 16,000 sites built or upgraded to provide even better coverage. The result? Our 4G data now reaches 99% of the UK population, with both urban and rural areas really feeling the benefit.

In cities, we’ve been busy reallocating our existing 3G spectrum to 4G, and today, about 90% of data traffic is carried over 4G on our network. We’re also seeing increased voice traffic over 4G, which means customers with phones compatible with 4G Calling are enjoying better quality calls.

We’re also using clever ‘carrier aggregation’ tech to improve bandwidth where the demand is at its highest. All told, we’ve improved capacity at over 4,000 4G sites across the UK, increasing peak download speeds in places like Birmingham, Brighton, Bristol, Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield and loads more besides.

But we’re not leaving rural areas out in the cold. In fact, 4G has been finding its way into more and more of the Great British countryside thanks to more than 500 ‘Grow the Grid’ sites, designed to bring 4G into those hard to reach parts of England, Wales and Scotland – with a couple hundred more sites on the way.

Ready for 5G

As 4G really proliferates around the UK, we’re also looking to the future, and what 5G will enable for the UK as a whole. In September we demonstrated the power that new technology has in store when we made the UK’s first live 5G holographic call – from our Manchester office to a live audience at our UK HQ in Newbury. It’s incredible stuff, but it’s just the tip of the 5G iceberg. 5G’s low latency, or lag time before the Network responds, and sheer speed may one day aid everything from remote sports coaching and long-distance surgery to online gaming, in 4K, on the go. To make sure things are ready for the next generation of connectivity, we’re already on the road to having 1,000 5G sites live – across seven cities – by 2020. And next year we plan to bring 5G to the Scottish Highlands, Cornwall, the Lake District, and more. Watch this space for more updates.

Bringing Gigabits home

On the subject of speed, how well does your home broadband keep up with your family’s increasing needs? With full fibre home broadband, you’ll enjoy download speeds 20 times faster than the current UK average. Right now though, just 5% of UK premises have access to full fibre, according to Ofcom. To us, that means there are far too many buffering wheels clogging up our TV, tablet and laptop screens.

That’s why we’re on a mission to improve the UK’s digital infrastructure, by bringing full fibre to more homes around the country than ever before. Vodafone Gigafast Broadband, our full fibre home broadband service, offers future-proof home broadband speeds of nearly one gigabit per second (1,000Mbps). In partnership with CityFibre, the UK’s largest alternative provider of fibre infrastructure, we’ll bring full fibre to ten cities and towns, from Stirling to Southend-on-Sea.
