The great thing about yoga is there’s almost no barrier to entry – it’s as simple or as complex as you want it to be – while doing just a few minutes a day can really help you limber up, lose weight, and feel refreshed. And in 2018, you no longer need to head out to a class to get stuck in.
To prove it – and with today being International Yoga Day – we thought we’d help you get started by rounding up the best yoga apps available. From quick and easy to expert level, these are the apps that turn your phone into a mobile yoga studio…
Voted as one of the App Store’s best in 2017, Daily Yoga is a pretty comprehensive one-stop shop for beginners and veterans ‘yogis’ alike. Use it to get to grips with the basics with the app’s two-week intro course, before moving on to over 250 different workouts – including ones created by top coaches. There’s also a raft of community-based features to help inspire you and your friends.
Another deep treasure trove of yoga content, Yoga International separates itself with the addition of a download option, letting you take any of its hundreds of classes – ranging from five to 60 minutes in length – with you, even if you don’t have a data connection. There’s also an addictive set of progress-tracking features, and a massive, ever-updating archive of yoga-based articles.
Short on time? This app does exactly what it says on the tin, letting you dip into quick yoga sessions without having to carve out more than 300 seconds of your time. There are a bunch of sessions to work through, with clear instructions and a timer to let you know when it’s time to move from one pose to the next. It’s a much leaner app than some of the others on offer here, but sometimes that’s a good thing.
It might put yoga purists off, but Asana Rebel’s yoga-inspired workouts are a great combination of strength and flexibility training with some cardio thrown in for good measure. You get a good chunk of frequently-updated workouts for free – ranging from short, low-effort warm-ups to ab-destroying plank-fests – with a boatload of addictive extra features available with a monthly subscription.
5. Kids Yogaverse: I Am Love | iOS, £3.99
You’re never too young to start on your yoga journey, which is why we’ve included this family-friendly app in the mix. I Am Love aims to bring your kids into the fold by telling a globe-trotting story that works key poses into the narrative. Both the story and the yoga are performed onscreen by kids, so there won’t be any intimidating, out of reach moves. All in all, it’s a great way for families to get flexing together.
