Spring has sprung and the long weekend is on its way, so make the most of your time off with this round-up of excellent family-friendly entertainment options…
The public holidays are flowing thick and fast, and summer’s just around the corner. Whether you’re kicking back on the couch or seeking an adventure this long weekend, we’ve got the goods to see you through the end of May bank holiday.
Here’s everything to stream, download and do from Saturday to Monday…
Stream: James Bay, Electric Light
Start the weekend right with the latest from Hitchin-born singer-songwriter James Bay. Describing his new album – Electric Light – as “a departure from what I’ve done”, Bay has cut his hair, ditched the hat and ramped up his song writing prowess.
It’s an evolution that’s evident from first single ‘Wild Love’, which opens with ethereal synths rather than the acoustic guitar of old. Hey, they do say a change is as good as a holiday. Tune into Bay’s new sound above.
Heading away for the weekend? Make the journey even more exciting with a good game of Car Bingo. With versions for both iOS and Android, it’s as easy as downloading the app and hitting the road. Then, simply be the first to match the items on your board to those you see on your travels, and… Bingo! Sounds like a winner to us.
Do: Visit a WWT Wetland Centre
Rediscover the wonders of nature at one of nine WWT Wetland Centres across the UK. Spring’s the perfect time to see baby ducklings, flamingos, cygnets and goslings take their first wobbly steps, and each wetland is lovingly designed so you can safely and easily get up close to some of the UK’s most important wildlife species.
Plus, many of the centres have events on for the Bank Holiday weekend. Check out the website to find a wetland near you.
Stream: Westworld season two
It’ll be best to wait until the kids go to bed before diving into this one, but there’s no finer high-budget TV on at the moment than season two of Westworld. The robots are running wild in the futuristic theme park, and the plot is thickening like an addictive treacle.
You can catch seasons one and two right now with a NOW TV Entertainment Pass, which you can grab at no extra cost with a Vodafone Red Entertainment Plan. Click here to find out more.
Download: Files Go by Google | Android, FREE
Whilst you’ve got the time, why not take a few minutes to give your phone a quick spruce up? Files Go is Google’s smart solution for phones crammed with too much digital clutter, letting people running out of space claim back some precious megabytes and gigabytes.
Just let the app access your apps, files, pictures and videos and it’ll routinely run a broom through to highlight anything you don’t need to keep hold of. You can then get rid of those unwanted screengrabs, unused apps, duplicate downloads et al with the push of a button.
Do: Treasure Trails
Treasure Trails are family-friendly, self-guided treasure hunts. There are 1,200 trails available across the UK, with each one designed as a mystery that’ll have you solving riddles and discovering hidden parts of your home town.
All you need to do to get going is head over to the Treasure Trails website, pick one (they each cost £6.99) and download the PDF. You can then either follow the trail on your phone, or by printing it off into a booklet.
Stream: Live cricket – England vs Pakistan
Looking to catch some quintessentially British bank holiday sport? Tune into Sky Sports Mobile TV on Monday for the final day of the five-day England vs Pakistan test series at Lords.
England had a bit of a miserable winter, losing to New Zealand shortly after a dire Ashes performance against Australia. But can a refreshed roster spruce up our chances? Tune in any time from Thursday 24 May to find out.
Download: DreamLab | iOS, Android, FREE
It’s the end of the bank holiday weekend, so you’re in need of a good night’s sleep before normal life resumes tomorrow. But before you bed down for the night, why not spend a couple of moments turning your phone into a cancer-fighting super computer, like John Boyega?
DreamLab does just that, putting some of your phone’s computing power to use while you sleep to solve complex scientific tests designed to bring us closer than ever to finding the cure for cancer.
Do: Get your head together
You’ve got an extra day to relax, and a four-day week ahead. Why not top up those good vibes with a spot of mindfulness? The good news is it only takes ten minutes of focus to sort the old brain box out with one of the many mindfulness apps in the charts.
Headspace is probably the best known of these, offering a bunch of sessions for free, and in-app purchases to unlock dozens more. So, sit down, close your eyes, breathe, and get your week off to a zen-like start.
