Galaxy S9 and S9+ vs Galaxy S8: in-depth

Ok, so the first thing that’ll grab your attention is the Galaxy S9’s stunning design. An evolution of the lines and curves found in the S8 before it, the S9 range still boasts metallic construction and a sleek side profile – keeping things small and svelte despite its huge underlying power.

But, of course, the real star of the show – on both the S9 and the S9+ – is that massive display.

Once again, you’ve got a choice between 5.8-inch or 6.2-inch Super AMOLED panels, both of which melt seamlessly into the rest of the device thanks to tiny top and bottom bezels. And because it’s AMOLED, you’ll get bright whites, jet-black blacks, and really rich colours across the spectrum. It’s the same pair of panels you’ll find in the S8 range, but when the viewing experience is this good, why change things?

Nestled just above that gorgeous screen is a selfie cam that puts the rear-facing sensors on lesser phones to shame. As with the S8, it’s an 8-Megapixel number with an F1.7 aperture -for taking better night shots, and autofocus for crystal clear selfies.

Round the back, Samsung’s best-in-class 12-Megapixel sensor returns, this time with an F1.5 – F2.7 dual aperture, helping let more light in than the S8’s camera can manage – perfect for when you’re taking shots at night. The S9’s 1.4um sized pixels, meanwhile, also capture more light – and more detail – in pretty much any situation.

Where things get really cool this time around is with the addition of a second rear camera on the S9+. It’s another 12-Megapixel cam, but this time with an F2.4 aperture. It allows for a new 2x zoom feature, letting you get super close to the action without losing clarity. Both models also now boast a brand new super-slow mo mode, which will bring even the fastest of video subjects to a glorious crawl. Oh, and there’s also a new ‘AR Emoji’ feature, which lets you animate a cartoon version of yourself or a selection of cute critters to send to friends.

Underneath, we’re looking at a brand new, crazily-powerful Octa-core Exynos 9810 processor with 4GB of RAM (or 6GB in the S9+), easily making the S9 and S9+ among the fastest phones around, while also being more efficient than the S8 range.

A meaty 3,000 mAh battery – or 3,500 mAh in the S9+ – will keep things ticking away all day long, while wireless charging and Samsung’s adaptive fast charging technology make topping up quick and easy.

What else? Well, plenty! How about the inclusion of a lesser-spotted headphone jack, with audio tuned by AKG and Dolby atmos-compatible speakers? Then there’s IP68 water and dust-resistance, letting the S9 range take a dunk of up to 1.5 metres for 30 minutes.

Looking for peace of mind when it comes to your digital life? As we’ve detailed in our Tech Trivia posts, smartphone security has been venturing down brand new avenues in the last year. Accordingly, with the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, Samsung’s upped the ante from the Galaxy S8 with a combination of fingerprint, iris and face scanners. This new ‘Intelligent Scan’ combines the impossible-to-copy pattern of your iris with the shape and features of your face – making both devices more secure than ever before.

Samsung’s virtual assistant Bixby is back in fine style, too, ready and willing to help you with any task – big or small.

Last of the headline features is the return of DeX, Samsung’s take on ‘use your smartphone as your computer’ convergence. As with the S8 before it, the S9 range is compatible with Samsung’s DeX dock, which effectively transforms the phone into a desktop computer when paired with a monitor, keyboard and mouse. And the S9’s new Exynos 9810 processor will only make that experience all the slicker.

In summary, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ are stunning, powerful, ultra-modern flagships, stuffed to the gills with the very best of 2018 tech – making them the perfect update to last year’s Galaxy S8.
