Samsung is yet to launch the new Galaxy S9, but that hasn’t stopped us all guessing at what features it might hold. Get the latest from the rumour mill in this predictions piece, as we shine a spotlight on the smartphone ahead of its release…

It’s official! Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S9 at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona on 25 Feb. But what might the first super smartphone of 2018 look like? Well, that’s the million-dollar question…

We’ve gazed into our crystal ball and rummaged through the rumours. And, from headphone jacks to processing power, here’s what could be coming next…

Design: Familiar but not boring

If recent leaks from Venture Beat reporter Evan Blass are to be believed, the design of Samsung’s Galaxy S9 won’t stray too far from the S8 shape we know and love. The idea of improvement rather than revolution now seems to be consensus. Perhaps just slightly lighter and a bit narrower, to fit easily in one hand.

Will it also come in purple? On that, we’re not so sure. However, it is thought the fingerprint reader will be placed underneath the phone’s rear camera lens for more intuitive, less smudgy scanning than seen in the S8.

Speaking of dust and dirt, could Samsung be applying its newly licensed hi-tech coating for the ultimate waterproof phone? We’ll have to wait and see.

Display: Larger, wider, clearer

According to the team at Pocket-lint, “The Samsung Galaxy S9 and the S9+, will continue the trend of the large display, minimal footprint.” Expect the current S8 and S8+ screen sizes of 5.8-inches and 6.2-inches to return for truly immersive viewing.

Questions have arisen over whether the S9 will sport the same curved-edge screen as the S8, though we expect it to remain. And you can count on Super AMOLED for whiter whites and brighter brights.

Audio: Keep the jack, pump up the volume

Commentators are fairly certain Samsung will not ditch the jack, but will instead add AKG-tuned stereo speakers and headphones for ultra-high-quality sound.

The team at TechRadar also believe the audio subsystem of the chipset has been upgraded, which should allow for improved audio and stable processing that’s lighter on your battery. All we know is, it’s sounding good and that’s music to our ears.

Camera: Reimagined

It’s no secret Samsung takes stunning snaps. Camera quality has improved year on year and they’re certainly teasing exciting changes in Galaxy S9, with a variable 12MP F1.5 – F2.4 dual aperture rear camera. The ability to switch between the apertures would take the S9 closer to a DSLR than ever before, with enhanced low light shots and depth of field to rival all others on the market.

According to Venture Beat, the Plus will also offer a dual lens camera and a second rear camera (similar to the Note 8), with OIS for steady snaps regardless of camera shake. And both will retain the 8MP front camera for those picture perfect selfies.

Security: More intelligent facial scanning

A tweet by usually-reliable tipster Ice Universe in October 2017 fuelled rumours of advanced facial recognition features. While it states Galaxy S9 will use a “3D sensor front camera”, as yet there’s no real indication as to how the tech will work. If true, and the S9 does come with a 3D front sensor, this could provide another option for unlocking the most secure Galaxy flagship yet – potentially a hybrid iris/facial ‘Intelligent Scan’ function as suggested by Sam Central.

Power: The latest processor and OS

One component we’ll almost certainly see is the new Octa-core Snapdragon 845, according to Tech Advisor’s predicted specs, bringing benefits to battery life, charging and performance. That’s in addition to ‘vault-like’ security, and a 30 percent increase in efficiency for gaming, video and AR/VR. It’s faster and it’s seamless to keep up with your needs.

S9 is also expected to launch with Android Oreo pre-installed. This will be overlaid with Samsung’s intuitive TouchWiz interface and heavy integrated with Bixby – Samsung’s smart AI assistant.
