Specs at a glance:

  • 5.1-inch Full HD display (P10)
  • 5.5-inch WQHD display (P10 Plus)
  • 4GB RAM and 64GB storage as standard
  • Front fingerprint scanner
  • Leica Dual Camera
  • Front Leica camera with ‘adaptive selfie’ mode

First look

With their dual Leica camera set-up, ‘adaptive selfie’ mode and sleek design, the all new P10 and P10 Plus are practically made for instagrammers. While fairly similar in many regards, the Plus benefits from a larger 5.5-inch, higher resolution, wide angle display; a bigger battery; the option of more storage; and a slightly sharper camera. Both are coated in Gorilla Glass 5 for greater durability, are powered by the latest octa-core, Kirin 960 processor and support ‘SuperCharge’ to boost your battery faster.

One noteworthy change is the move away from Huawei’s previously rear-facing fingerprint scanner. This is now positioned on the front of both devices, doubling as the home button and providing vibration feedback.

“The fingerprint scanner is now positioned on the front of both devices.”

It also looks like Tom Morgan from Stuff was right – bezels have been kept to a minimum. Displays stretch right to the edges in both the P10 and P10 Plus for that seamless look, and – despite earlier rumours – both feature fully flat front panels, helping to keep the design slim and sleek.

The cameras

Like the Mate 9, the back of the P10 and P10 Plus feature one 20-megapixel monochrome sensor and one 12-megapixel colour sensor that work together to enable 2x zoom. The dual-camera set-up also helps with lowlight shots and, of course, it can be used to capture those all-important black-and-white pics as you unleash the artist within.

Both models benefit from optical image stabilisation and laser autofocus. However, the P10 Plus gets the slightly better lenses (f1.8 vs. f2.2) and Leica Summilux glass rather than the Summarit of the P10.

For the first time, that Leica partnership makes its way to the front of the handset – both phones feature a front-facing Leica 8-megapixel f1.9 camera for picture perfect selfies. The camera comes equipped with a smart ‘adaptive selfie’ mode that determines whether you’re taking a solo or group shot before scaling to fill the screen accordingly, and applying a pseudo-bokeh effect (blurring the background) for pro-looking pics every time. You can also shoot in portrait mode, which automatically enhances your subject’s features using advanced facial recognition technology.

Another interesting new photography feature is the Highlights app. Developed with GoPro, it works in a similar way to Google Photos or Zoe by HTC – providing a suite of editing tools that enable you to create mini-movies from your stills, complete with your choice of music.

The colour

The Huawei P10 is now available in Graphite Black, Mystic Silver and Greenery (exclusively at Vodafone until the end of June), while the P10 Plus is available in Graphite Black. And while they look slick, grubby mits are no trouble thanks to a clever fingerprint-resisting finish.

Under the hood

Powered by the latest 2.4GHz Kirin 960 processor – a chipset made by Huawei itself – both phones run Android 7.0 Nougat, overlaid with Huawei’s EMUI 5.1 operating system.

The P10’s 3200mAh battery is a solid effort that should cover you throughout the day, while the P10 Plus boasts a meatier 3750mAh cell to cater for that bigger display. This is a bit of a monster compared to 3600mAh cell seen in the Galaxy S7 Edge (a phone with the same spec screen), so you should be more than ok for power.

Both models come with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage as standard. However, the P10 Plus also offers a 6GB RAM and 128GB memory option, while both the P10 and P10 Plus can take a microSD up to 256GB.

Both the Huawei P10 and P10 Plus are now available from Vodafone UK with the P10 available in green until the end of June.
