As a self-described ‘habit maker’, this app helps you track how you’re really spending your time and energy with a simple colour-coded system. When you first access the app, you’ll be asked to select from a list of pre-set options such as ‘going to the gym’, ‘drinking water’ or ‘not smoking’, or to create your own activities and add these to your journal. You’ll then need to access the app once a day to record whether or not you’ve done each of the activities. Once you’ve been using it for a while, check out the trends feature to see where you need to step it up, or give yourself a big high five for smashing all your targets.

Based around the idea that it takes 21 days to form or break a habit, HabitSeed asks you to select any habit you want to change and stick to your plan for 21 days. Every day the app asks how you’re tracking, and as you progress your little ‘HabitSeed’ grows with you. Formerly known as Lift, helps you achieve your goals through coaching, community and data. Once you’ve set it up, you’ll need to add at least one habit to your dashboard and ‘check in’ every day to record your progress. Make your progress public to gain support from friends and other users, or hire a coach within the app to help keep you accountable.

Motive | Windows Phone, FREE
One for Windows Phone fans, Motive puts you in touch with a global network of like-minded people all seeking to achieve their life dreams – or just lose a bit of weight. The great thing about Motive is its social progress journal, where you can upload photos or pictures as well as using words to track your progress and motivate others, alongside tracking and statistics features.

Track your habits and set smart goals with this comprehensive tracker. Strides lets you track savings goals against fitness habits, or anything else you want to keep an eye on. You can set reminders for different aspects and monitor your progress with a raft of well-designed charts and graphs.

Balanced | iOS, FREE
Meet the motivational app designed to help you focus on doing more of the things that matter to you. Its emphasis on positivity and only including the things you love is, frankly, pretty refreshing. In the morning it suggests things you might want to do soon, and in the evening it gives you kudos for anything you’ve been doing particularly well. Plus, it provides a great sense of satisfaction when you swipe ‘done’ on to-do list items.

Setting goals, tracking progress, but still falling off the band wagon? It might be time to put your money where your mouth is. Stakes takes a novel approach to goal-setting, whereby you purchase ‘stakes’ to bet on tasks. If you achieve your goals, you’re in the clear. Slip up and you lose cold, hard cash.
