They’re finally here. After months of swirling rumours and online speculation, Apple has just lifted the lid on its brand new generation of iPhones: iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. They’re real stunners, and you can order yours here right now!

So what’s new? Quite a bit, actually, with a slew of new specs and upgrades, and even added water-resistance (effectively making both phones waterproof for up to 30 minutes in a depth of one metre). But, perhaps more importantly than raw specs, these new iPhones are finding favour with those in the know.

To see if these are the best iPhones yet, we’ve rounded up a handful of first impressions and hands-on reviews from around the web, each penned by tech journalists with their fingers on the digital pulse. Here’s what they have to say about Apple’s new flagship devices…

“iPhone 7 once again takes the familiar and puts a completely new spin on it. That starts on the surface, with new finishes like (matte) black and jet black, but goes all the way down to the the silicon with the new A10 Fusion chipset and Apple’s first custom wireless chip, the W1.

“Add to that a re-imagined Force Touch Home button, a new camera with optical zoom and depth of field affects, wide gamut colour from capture to display, booming stereo speakers, more and better LTE, water resistance as good as the original Apple Watch, and the list goes on and on.”

SlashGear
“Though they’re unmistakably iPhones at first glance, there’s actually a fairly large degree of change from the 6S and 6S Plus. The antenna lines are hidden a lot more effectively, and the aluminium puckers to encompass the camera in a way that’s far more organic and smooth.”

The Telegraph
“Lots of little things are different. The new A10 chip means the phone is faster and the battery life is longer, the camera is a big upgrade on what we had even a year ago – especially the dual camera on the 7 Plus – it’s water resistant, the display and speakers are better and there’s a new home button.”

Gizmodo
“It’s refreshing that Apple appears to be trying to do things differently, and to move phone technology forward. [The new] changes are different than anything that has come before. Indeed, though we haven’t had the chance to fully review the phone—stay tuned—it’s clear that the iPhone 7 is hiding some very big ideas in that very familiar aluminium chassis.”

TechRadar
“A phone is far more than its cosmetic appearance – and for many, the lack of changes in terms of the way it looks won’t matter, as the range of upgrades internally will be enough to satisfy. Its water-resistance is a new feature that will help a lot, and the screen upgrades do improve the quality.”

The Verge
“The real upgrades were saved for the larger iPhone 7 Plus’ dual camera system. The company says the new dual camera allows for true 2x optical zoom without loss of image quality. One of the lenses is equivalent to 28mm for wide angle shots (like a standard iPhone camera), while the other has a closer, 60mm equivalent lens.

“Switching between the two cameras is seamless in the iPhone 7 Plus’ camera app – just tap the 1x or 2x button and the camera will switch automatically. You can zoom further, up to 10x, but beyond 2x is digital zoom that crops the photo. Apple has also developed a feature that uses both lenses to mimic a shallow depth of field, like what can be accomplished with a larger DSLR.”

Business Insider
“While it’s easy to get caught up with design, it’s also important to look beyond that. This year’s iPhone is better than last year’s, and much, much better than 2014’s… There’s more than enough in the iPhone 7 to love.”
