Today is International Beer Day, but before you head your favourite local, why not sample a few of the best beer-friendly apps? Here's how to get the most from your next pint...
They say us Brits love to go on and on about the weather, but we can’t help it: the heat is finally here! And (as long as you’re old enough) there are few things in life that accompany a balmy August evening quite as well as an ice-cold beer.
So it’s just as well that today, 5 August, is International Beer Day! Started in 2007 in California, the day has quickly spread around the world since – and with good reason; who doesn’t like a good reason to grab a bevvy? So that’s your impetus to indulge sorted, but how do you go about it? Don’t head down to the pub until you’ve downloaded these essential beer-lovin’ apps…
Rounding up the next round
UnTappd | Free, iOS, Android, Windows Phone
Think collecting Pokémon is addictive? Wait until you try Untappd. It boasts a huge community of beer lovers, each vying to drink as many different craft and unique beers as possible. Tell Untappd every time you sample a new brew and you’ll be awarded new badges, which you can then brag about to your pals. Just remember: beer discovery is a marathon, not a sprint.
Elixr | Free, iOS, Android
Elixr takes the idea of ‘checking in’ at different locations and applies it to drinks, with a splash of Instagram thrown in for good measure. The app’s photostream shows what fellow Elixr users are currently siupping on in real time, and from here you can add a certain pint to your to-drink list, or find a pub that serves it. And when it’s your turn, just snap your brew and upload it to the feed.
iBrewMaster 2 | £4.99, iOS, Android
Working your way through a few choice ales at the bar is all well and good, but there’s real satisfaction to be had in brewing your own. iBrewmaster 2 (the app’s second generation) is a one-stop-shop for all things home brewing. It comes pre-loaded with 50 recipes, with the option to buy more or upload your own, alongside all the functionality you need to keep track of your batch – from brew to bottle.
MyBeerNation | £3.99, iOS
Sometimes you want to go straight to the source. MyBeerNation lets you do just that by housing contact and tour information for over 4000 breweries worldwide. You can add the ones you’ve been to in the app’s journal section (with photos and text), and add a comprehensive review for everything you’ve sampled. Your next pilgrimage awaits.
BeerAdvocate | Free, online
In July this year, BeerAdvocate, the long running online magazine, discontinued its mobile app in favour of a spangly new responsively designed website. But since the app used to function mostly as portal to the site’s content – which hosts festivals, proffers the latest news and has a massive forum community of beer lovers – we think it still deserves an honourable mention. Head to beeradvocate.com, click on your phone browser’s share icon and ‘add to homepage’ to create an app-like shortcut.
Drinkaware | Free, iOS, Android
Ok, time for the grownup bit; drinking responsibly is always the key to having a great night out, and to not feeling too awful the next day. To that end, Drinkaware’s official app helps you simply and easily keep track of your units as you go, along with stacks of info on the benefits of cutting your intake down to the recommended levels.
Get your grill on… Why not team your beer with a barbie? If you’re getting ready to fire up the BBQ this summer, you need these top barbecue apps in your apron pocket.
