Announced only a couple of weeks ago, the new Vodafone Smart ultra 7 follows on from the success of last year’s Smart ultra 6, cramming in a full HD 5.5-inch display, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, a 13-megapixel rear snapper and a 2960mAh battery. All for £135 on Pay As You Go!

We think it’s the best budget smartphone around, but you needn’t take our word for it; just take a look at what the web’s tech experts make of it to see for yourself…

“Vodafone’s gone with an octa-core 2.0GHz MediaTek MT6755 processor, which is paired with 2GB of RAM. In terms of speed, it’s not far behind the Moto G4’s Snapdragon 617 chip, as the Smart Ultra 7 scored 784 in Geekbench 3’s single core test and 2,927 in the multicore test, the former just edging in front of the Moto G4’s result of 717.

“That’s pretty impressive for a phone that costs just £135, and it storms past other, cheaper budget smartphones like the Wileyfox Swift, 3rd Gen Moto G and the Obi Worldphone MV1. It certainly feels pretty nippy in everyday use, and its vanilla version of Android 6.0.1 rarely leaves you waiting for anything to happen.

“Solid performance, close to stock Android, and – best of all – cheap; the Smart Ultra 7 is easily one of the best budget smartphones available right now.”

“The best part of the Ultra 7 is, arguably, the software experience. Like the Ultra 6 and its popular competitor, the Moto G, the latest Vodafone handset runs a near-stock version of Android. You’ll get 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box with no whacky wallpapers, icon packs or menu customisations of note.”

In Alex Todd’s unboxing video he gives his first impressions and a rundown of what you can expect when you first unwrap your new ultra 7. “It has a slight rounding at the edge much like the Smart Prime 7 did as well,” he notices, “so there’s an element of premium in there despite the affordability that this phone is going for.”

“The phone also has NFC, which means it’s also Android Pay compatible. Provided you have a card with a bank that’s supported by the service. But Android Pay is now of course in the UK, so it’s nice to have yet another low cost device that you can actually use the new mobile payment service with.”

“A mid to upper tier smartphone which actually had my friends and colleagues believing it was a top-end phone. Good spec, good price, a very decent smartphone all round.”

“In the past, budget phones have been forced to run with distinctly average processors. Not so much in this phone. While it’s not the most high-end of powerful mobile chips, the Helio P10 inside the ultra 7 is quick and features eight cores. As a reminder, this is the same processor found inside the Oppo F1 Plus; a phone which costs more than double what the Smart ultra 7 from Vodafone costs.

“The camera’s results seems a far cry from the fuzzy, distorted and over-saturated photos we’re used to seeing in the ultra-affordable market. Our first few shots show up ample detail and great colour. Perhaps more surprising is that it even has manual controls within the camera app for adjusting brightness, shutter speed and white balance. It also shoots in full HD resolution and sits alongside a dual-tone LED flash on the back of the phone.”

“Combined with its clean software, powerful processor and long-lasting battery, the Vodafone Smart Ultra 7 is easily one of the best phones under £150. There simply aren’t many phones on the market at this price point with the same feature list, especially not with a large 5.5-inch Full HD resolution display.”

“Vodafone’s claim that the Smart Ultra 7 is great because “it’s got all-round performance at an incredible price” is pretty accurate. I’d add that the phone features an almost untouched version of Android, which is perhaps its best feature, as well as a vibrant screen and what feels like solid build quality too. With all that in mind, it’s impressive that Vodafone is able to offer the Smart Ultra 7 cheaper than the Moto G4.
