Want better signal in your local rural pub? #CISS100 can help! Read on to find out how we can bring 3G to the heart of your local community...
Imagine the scene: you find (or already frequent) a fantastic rural pub where the beer selection is awesome, the ambiance is perfect and the food is to die for, but there’s one downside – no mobile signal, so no way to share it with the world. In some places this can’t be helped. Whether it’s thick stone masonry, a geographic valley or a local disinterest in mobile masts, some pubs, village halls and community centres just can’t be serviced. Or can they?
Enter our Community Indoor Sure Signal programme, or #CISS100 for short. Like our Rural Open Sure Signal programme (#R0SS100) – which seeks to bring reliable 2G and 3G coverage to 100 rural communities in the UK – #CISS100 wants to get rural ‘hubs’ connected, only this time it’s about indoor spaces like your local pub or community centre. Know somewhere that might benefit? Read on to find out how you can help…
‘Connected to the world’
First thing’s first: while our #ROSS100 programme uses ‘femto’ cell boxes connected to a broadband line and placed on the outside of buildings across a village, #CISS100 will use smaller femto cell boxes placed inside the pub. With them, we’re looking to outfit 100 community centres around the UK – like pubs, village halls, schools, and local shops – with these clever ‘Sure Signal+’ boxes that bring 3G signal into those hard to reach buildings.
These boxes, which are about the size of a cereal box, connect to an existing broadband router and work their magic to turn that data into mobile signal.
If you’re interested in how, you can find out loads about how femtocell tech works here, but you only really need to know two things for now: it’s based on the same technology as our brilliant little consumer Sure Signal kits for the home, and it really works!
Case in point is The Bear and Ragged Staff pub in Bransford, Worcester, one of our pilot #CISS100 hubs, where strong, reliable 3G signal is now pumping around every tap, seat and screen.
“We are absolutely delighted with our Vodafone Sure Signal+ unit,” says pub worker Lynda Williams, “which is providing our business with excellent mobile coverage. Being located in a rural area, this is something we’ve struggled with, but Vodafone has provided us with a real solution. It was extremely easy to install and within minutes we were connected to the world.
We’ll be picking 100 worthy community hubs around the UK, each of which will soon be able to feel the benefit of modern mobile connectivity. We’ll also be updating on our progress right here on Vodafone Social, so stay tuned for more.
