Leaping off the pages
Netflix’s partnership with Marvel is the same as its partnership with any other producer – it’s designed to give all parties freedom to create something expressive and entertaining. And so far as Daredevil and Marvel are concerned, that creative process starts with the original source material – the comic books:
“Daredevil has lived in print for fifty years, so as storytellers, we’re presented with an embarrassment of riches,” say showrunners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez. “Viewers who know the source material will definitely recognise the echoes of storylines such as ‘Man Without Fear,’ ‘Born Again’ and others, but we rarely think of our show as a ‘superhero’ show; we’ve always approached it more like a crime drama, with heavy influence from classic New York City cop movies like ‘The French Connection’ and ‘Serpico.’”
So, how exactly do Netflix and Marvel take a popular comic book and mould it into a popular TV show? According to Doug and Marco, it all starts with the characters:
“We always try to get inside the hearts and minds of our characters,” they say. “In the case of Daredevil, it always comes back to the character of Matt Murdock. Our job is to make him live and breathe and be as flesh-and-blood real as possible, despite his comic book roots.
“Matt’s inner landscape is rich and complicated. He tortures himself. He’s drawn to violence, acts on his impulses, then feels guilt over what he’s done – and that he’s not done enough. Matt never stops questioning himself. His Catholicism drives him to take on the city’s crime and violence, and deep down he feels the need to redeem himself through blood. Our world is built around this man, so a grounded, realistic world is the only thing that could spring outward from him.”
“The beauty is that we get to create ‘our run’ of Matt’s world. Bringing Marvel’s Daredevil, Elektra and Frank Castle into the real world – all played by great actors – means that we create new storylines and threads of narrative, but we never feel the need to reinvent the backstory because it’s so damn good.”
Comic book fans aren’t always easy to please, but as Doug and Marco explain, the response to Marvel’s Daredevil season one was phenomenal:
“They loved it. They know that we’re fans, just as they are. We’re thrilled that they’ve hung with us on every turn of the ride so far, and we certainly hope to reward them with more twists and surprises in the future!”
