As part of our Armed Forces Corporate Covenant, Vodafone is teaming with Skiing for Heroes to raise money for British armed forces veterans...

With the help of the team at JustTextGiving, we’re trying to do our bit to help men and women who’ve been injured in the line of duty. How? By taking part in 2016’s incredible Skiing with Heroes event. What’s the story, and how can you get involved? Read on to find out…

Snowing our support

Skiing with Heroes is an annual charity event that aims to provide medically discharged veterans with a unique opportunity to hit the slopes in Klosters, Switzerland with adaptive equipment, also receiving one-on-one mentoring to build both their confidence and physical fitness. It also offers a specially created employment programme, which helps to get our ex-servicemen and women back into the world of work.

“I met some truly inspirational people who gave me the drive to challenge myself.”

“It’s a really amazing week,” said one veteran who took part in 2014’s Skiing with Heroes trip. “I met some truly inspirational people who gave me the drive to challenge myself and to reach the goals that I’d set myself. It was a great opportunity for everyone to share their stories and it makes you feel that you are not on your own – it really was something extremely special.”

It’s an undoubtedly great cause, then, but where do we fit in? Well, for the next event in January 2016, we’ll be sending four ex-military Vodafone UK employees along to the Skiing with Heroes programme, and they’re hoping to raise a massive £10,000 for the charity between now and then. It’s a brilliant chance for our guys to share their experiences and help steer the veterans in attendance not only down some treacherous slopes, but also into gainful employment. And that fits right in with our work in bringing ex forces members on board here at Vodafone HQ.

We need your help, too. Our four Vodafone employees – James Duncan, Chris Naylor, Nick Martin, led by ex-serviceman, Paul Morton, are raising money via JustTextGiving, and they’d love your support. The good news is that if you’d like to help, it couldn’t be simpler. All you need to do is text SKIS60 and the amount you want to donate to 70070 and your donation will wing its way to the team’s fund, helping them hit their £10,000 combined target in no time flat.

“As an ex-soldier who previously served with 22 SAS I‘ve had friends and colleagues who gave everything for world freedom. I had a feeling of incompleteness and believed I could and should do more based on my military background and current experiences to help others,” says Paul. “This is not merely a charity event for me and I am planning to be a long term volunteer for the charity – to assist in the work they are doing to support rehabilitation into employment.”

Paul and the rest of the team will be heading out January 28-31 next year, so there’s plenty of time to smash that fundraising target! You can find out loads more about Skiing with Heroes here.
