The Sony Xperia Z5 Premium is the first smartphone in the world to boast a 4K display. But what does that mean for you? And is it the future? We've been speaking to Sony to find out...

Sony’s Xperia Z5 Premium is something of a revolution. Even if it had the same core specs as its smaller brother, the Xperia Z5, it’d still be a stunning addition to the line-up, but the Premium’s display takes things to a new level.

Why? Because it’s the first smartphone ever to feature a 4K display. For those unsure, 4K is the next step in display technology, with the Z5 Premium offering 806 pixels per square inch – that’s compared to just 72ppi on your HD TV.

But why go so super high definition on a phone? That’s the first question we posed to Sony’s Warren Saunders when we had a chance to sit down with him at the phone’s launch event.

Dabbling in the future

“Our research and development process is constant,” says Warren, “and that often involves experimenting with tech that’s years away from becoming mainstream.” So does 4K fit into that category? “Sony’s a leader in 4K, and we’ve been testing Ultra HD smartphone displays for some time now.”

Thing is, while Warren may describe this as an experiment, the Z5 Premium is far from just a ‘proof of concept’ device. In fact, Sony has pulled out all the stops to make sure that its crystal clear display doesn’t impact negatively on any other part of the phone’s day-to-day use – especially the battery.

“The Xperia Z5 Premium has been designed as a high-performance mobile device,” he assures us. “And part of that high-performance comes directly from the battery we use in the device. The Z5 Premium boasts a high capacity 3430mAh battery – which means it will last for up to two days, along with a quick charge capability, which eliminates the need for long charging times.

“What’s more, our Battery STAMINA Mode optimizes how your phone’s battery is used by automatically limiting processes and connectivity when it’s not needed – and Ultra STAMINA Mode will keep the Xperia Z5 Premium running on its core functions for a week if needed.”

So the Z5 Premium has enough power to back up that big, beautiful 5.5-inch 4K display, but why go so big in the first place? The answer is simple: 4K movies demand to be seen on the big screen…

“Screen size has an important impact on what we do with our phones,” says Warren, “which is why we’re keen to cater for a variety of audiences while not compromising in terms of premium quality. But at the end of the day, we believe that a 5.5-inch screen is the minimum size in terms of getting the most out of 4K. There’s an increasing amount of 4K content available now, including YouTube and Netflix, and it all really shines on a display this size – but we didn’t want to go too big so that the Z5 Premium isn’t pocket or handbag friendly.”

So there you have it: the Z5 Premium offers a world-leading display with the power to back it up, and in a size that Sony has worked hard to fine-tune. “The Xperia Z5 Premium is for early adopters,” says Warren in closing. “It’s for people who demand the latest and greatest technology as well as the newest innovations in every device they own.”
