Looking for something properly terrifying to watch this Halloween? Here's the scariest stuff Netflix has to offer...
Settling in for a spooky sofa session this weekend? With Halloween falling on a Saturday this year, there’s no better time of year to gorge on some gory TV shows and movies. And with Vodafone Broadband, you can do just that for free.
That’s because all our Vodafone Broadband packages come with 12 months of Netflix that you can enjoy on us*, letting you get stuck into the streaming service’s huge library of entertainment. So what should you watch? Here are our scariest picks:
Your very own fright fest
Have the kids gone to bed? Then it’s time to shut the curtains, turn off the lights and hide behind the sofa. Let’s let the truly terrifying telly begin…
Chilling, critically acclaimed Aussie horror from first time director Jennifer Kent. Mother and son Amelia and Sam battle a mysterious monster after it gets unleashed from a children’s book, but…can you get rid of the Babadook?
It’s now a huge franchise, but with the original and arguably best in the series available on Netflix, Insidious – about nefarious ghosts trying to possess the body of a comatose boy – is a great shout when it comes to ticking your horror box this Halloween.
Blair Witch Project
The father of all ‘found footage’ horror movies, 1999’s breakout horror smash hit centres on the uncovered recordings of a group of students in search of the legendary titular murderer in the Maryland forest. As you can probably guess, things go very, very wrong.
This fresh adaptation of Stephen King’s 1974 novel aims to stay truer to the book than the 1976 movie, and ups the ante when it comes to suspense and shocks. What remains the same though is the story of the tortured teen with supernatural powers who’s pushed too far at her senior prom.
Paranormal Activity 4
The fourth in the ever expanding Paranormal Activity series uses the same tricks as its predecessors – the CCTV-style in house footage of creepy goings on – this time focussing on some mysterious new neighbours.
Bates Motel focusses on the young Norman Bates (of Psycho fame) and his mother, and reveals how his state of mind went from mundane to murderous, while bringing the Psycho universe into a modern day setting at the same time.
The Saw series
If ‘horror’ to you means ‘lots of gore’, then the Saw movies are the ones for you. Netflix has Saw IV, Saw V and The Final Chapter available to stream, allowing fans to feast on over six hours of Jigsaw’s terrifying death trap puzzles.
American Horror Story
American Horror Show’s uniqueness comes thanks to the self-contained format of its seasons – each one is its own story, set in its own part of the US and with fresh characters, meaning the pacing is tight and things never drag on. You can catch seasons 1-4 on Netflix now.
Scream (TV series)
Based on the late, great Wes Craven’s 90s horror classics of the same name, the Scream series centres on a trail of grizzly teen murders in the town of Lakewood. You can catch the first season now.
After some scoffs with your scares? The Wayan Brothers’ Scary Movie is the one for you. It follows every beat found in every mid-late 90s teen slasher movie to the letter, but substitutes gags for frights.
