Missed the news? Sony has just announced the latest handsets in its award-winning Z series smartphone family – the Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact – and they’re coming to Vodafone UK very soon.

They’re brilliantly made, powerful phones with all the hallmarks of Sony’s premium industrial design prowess. But you needn’t just take our word on all that – experts from across the web’s biggest tech sites have all had a chance to see the device and the verdict is pretty much unanimously positive. Read on for a smattering of first impressions from those in the know…

Sony Xperia Z5 first impressions

Stuff.tv

“The Z5, simply put, is just lovely. If you’re already an Xperia owner, its solid, minimal design will be reassuringly familiar, and Sony’s taken extra steps to make it feel even more premium. Its brushed metal sides now sport an engraved Xperia logo, but the biggest change from the Z3’s build is the glass rear, which now has a frosted finish. Not only does this look and feel fantastic (we found it hard to stop caressing it, if we’re being honest), but it also does a wonderful job of resisting ugly fingerprints.

“Its newer, flatter power button/fingerprint sensor adds a genuinely useful, comfortable trick to the Z5’s arsenal, while that 23Mp camera promises to give LG and Samsung’s top guns a run for their money.”

Engadget

“All these new Xperias are familiar, but changed. The same, but different. Those coming from a previous-generation Z will notice how nicely this latest bunch feels to hold, as well as some neat design additions.”

“The big selling point Sony is going for with the Z5 is the camera, no doubt about it. Apart from the battery upgrade, the rest of the phone is rather similar to previous releases – but the camera really marks it out. There’s a 23MP sensor to play with, and the autofocus is now a startling 0.03s to gain a sharp image.”

Pocket-Lint

“The real enhancements here are in the camera and a continued refinement in design. The Xperia Z5 might be an almost predictable upgrade, but it’s as true a flagship phone as its predecessors.”

Sony Xperia Z5 Compact first impressions

The Verge

“We think the star of the show is the Xperia Z5 Compact. As we’ve found in previous years, the smallest Xperia is really the most satisfying. The build quality is remarkable, the colors lovable, and the 4.6-inch display is a delight, even novel, after years of larger and larger handsets. It also encapsulates Sony’s ability to produce incredibly functional devices. The side-mounted fingerprint sensor, the waterproof case, the two-day battery life, the super-fast camera — they’re all fantastic attributes and packing them into such a small device feels satisfyingly practical.”

TechRadar

“With more power, a new camera, a fingerprint scanner, a slightly bigger battery, fast charging and a capless microUSB port, the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact looks to be a significant upgrade over the year old Xperia Z3 Compact. The Z3 Compact is still a fantastic phone and is likely to be all the cheaper once the Z5 Compact hits stores, but if you want a premium Android handset in a smaller size the Sony Xperia Z5 Compact could well be the new king.”

Cnet

“The Z5 Compact may be attractive to customers who long for a smaller device in an age when flagship smartphones are only getting bigger.”

Stuff.tv

“A few years ago, you’d be mocked in the street for carting around a phone with a ridiculous 4.6in display – the iPhone was stuck at 3.5in until 2012 remember – but in this age of 5.5in screens being the norm, that size is an absolute blessing for gadgeteers hankering for an easily manageable, one-handed display. Your thumbs should be able to merrily dance over every single millimetre of the Z5 Compact’s screen without a care in the world, and there’s something to be said for having the ability to bash out a quick text with one hand while walking to the station without fear of losing your phone to Mother Gravity.”
