Wanna go back in time? Head down to 1984G Street with David Hasselhoff for a trip to the 80s, and to see what mobiles, music, video and games were like 30 years ago...
This month we’re celebrating our 30th birthday. It’s three decades since the first mobile phone call was made in the UK on our network, and while all manner of technology has come on in leaps and bounds since then, Vodafone is still right at the very forefront of the UK’s mobile scene.
To mark the date in style, we’ve got an exclusive RUN-DMC and Raleigh Ritchie gig in London on Sunday 18 January. And for those of you who weren’t lucky enough to win tickets in our giveaway last week, don’t worry as you’ll be able to stream the gig live to your phone wherever you get our ultrafast 4G service, or on the Vodafone UK YouTube channel. Download the Power To app here for Android and here for iOS or simply head to YouTube.co.uk/VodafoneUK on 18 January at 8pm to get involved.
But before all that we are going back in time, and we want you to come with us. Keen to revel in some 80s nostalgia? Read on to find out how to get a blast from the past at 1984G Street with #30yearsVodafone and none other than the man, the myth, the legend: David Hasselhoff…
Step back in time…
Heading to Covent Garden in London this weekend? You should be. From Friday 16 January to Sunday 18, Vodafone has something a bit special for you to experience in the East Piazza: our one-of-a-kind 1984G Street.
Acting like a real-life time machine, our little congregation of shops will be waiting to transport you right back to the mid-80s, a time when hair was bigger and shoulders more padded, and when mobile phones were brand new to the UK. And 1984G Street was opened up this week by none other than 80s superstar David Hasselhoff…
The Hoff wheeled into town in his iconic talking car KITT, and marked the beginning of a three day extravaganza that aims to take you through the last three decades in style. 1984G Street will show you where we’ve come from and where we’re at right now in 2015, and there’ll be loads to explore.
Here’s a brief overview of what you can see and do:
The UK’s first Vodafone Store
Fancy sampling the latest and greatest handsets? How about the Transportable Vodafone VT1? It only weighs 11lbs, and offers a stonking 30 minutes of calling on a single charge! Step into our 1980s Vodafone store to see just how far mobile tech has come.
Vodafone 4G Arcade
When it comes to mobile gaming, things have moved on a bit since Snake’s heyday. Check out the Vodafone Arcade to play some of history’s biggest mobile gaming greats on the big screen. There are plenty of prizes for those who nab the high score, too.
Remember forking over your life savings for new records, only to find out they were rubbish? Spotify records will ease the pain, letting you sample 80s classics and modern gems alike. There are prizes to be won, exclusive Spotify merchandise to grab and hours of music to indulge in. You can even pick your favourite record and walk out of the store with a bespoke playlist on your Spotify account, inspired by that track.
NOW TV Video Rental
Peruse the shelves of NOW TV Video rental and you’ll find classic movies and top TV shows side by side, but you won’t need to brave the cold to have them back within 48 hours – they’re all on demand and on your phone whenever you fancy. What’s more, if you pick the right titles you could win a multitude of top NOW TV Entertainment goodies.
