How much telly will you watch over Christmas? And how much of that will actually be on a TV, rather than a mobile? NOW TV has the answers...
Everyone knows that Christmas is the best time of year to sit back, relax and binge on the best that TV has to offer. But what you might not know, is just how much of that telly watching will be done on a mobile or tablet in 2014.
This month on 4G

We’ve just released the results of some new research into people’s festive viewing habits, and what we found out may surprise you…
Silent night, mobile night
Sign up to Vodafone 4G, and you’ll unlock a world of amazing content*. That’s because our 4G plans come with the choice of Sky Sports Mobile TV, Spotify Premium or NOW TV Entertainment subscriptions included. Opting for the latter will open the door to a huge selection of over 250 top TV box sets, along with shows from 13 channels you can’t get on Freeview.
In the run up to Christmas, we’ve asked over 4,000 Brits what their favourite shows are and how much they watch on their phones and tablets, versus a traditional TV.
“40% of those surveyed said they’ll be watching between 1 and 3 hours of TV on their mobile devices every day…”
And it’s the answer to that second question that really shines a light on how tech is changing our habits at home. A whopping 40% of those surveyed said they’ll be watching between 1 and 3 hours of TV on their mobile devices every single day over the Christmas break (24 December to 1 January). To put that into perspective, that’s the equivalent of every one of us in the UK accumulating 15 hours of mobile streaming during the whole of Christmas.
Looks like the days of arguing over what to watch on Christmas Day are long gone!
“With NOW TV, Vodafone customers can spend their Christmas morning opening a virtual stocking packed full of shows like Hannibal and 24 before enjoying their lunch with Karl Pilkington or Kris Kringle,” says NOW TV’s Gidon Katz. “NOW TV is home to the latest TV shows, some of the most popular box sets as well as over 1,000 movies all ready to settle down to this Christmas holiday.”
You can get much more insight into what makes NOW TV tick from our exclusive interview with Gidon here.
Who’s your festive favourite?
87% of Brits now own a smartphone or tablet. It’s a massive percentage, so it’s no wonder that more people than ever are streaming TV and movies to their mobile devices. But what are our favourite picks?
According to our research, the top choice for NOW TV Entertainment fans this Christmas is 24, with more than one in five sticking the latest season – set in our very own London – on their must watch list. But the second place spot couldn’t have been snagged by a show much further in tone or style from Kiefer Sutherland’s action drama; it goes to An Idiot Abroad, starring Karl Pilkington, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.
And, thanks to his unique style and charm, Karl was also our top choice when asked who we’d like to have round for Christmas Dinner… Even if he would moan about your cooking. Check out the top fives for each below:
The most popular box sets that Brits would like to catch up on over Christmas are:
1. 24 ( Sky 1)
2. An Idiot Abroad (Sky 1)
3. Mad Men ( Sky Atlantic)
4. Hannibal (Sky Living)
5. Scandal ( Sky Living)
The characters that Britons would most like to have Christmas dinner with are:
1. Karl Pilkington from An Idiot Abroad ( Sky 1)
2. Kris Kringle (AKA the ‘real Santa Claus’, played by Sir Richard Attenborough) from Miracle on 34th Street (Sky Movies)
3. Buddy, from Elf ( Sky Movies)
4. Jack Bauer, from 24 ( Sky 1)
5. Princess Anna from Frozen (Sky Movies)
