We recently told you about the introduction of subtitles on our new help video content, and today we’re pleased to share more news of services to support deaf and hard of hearing customers with hearing impairments.

We’ve just introduced a new service using some pioneering online technology to improve the level of online support we can provide to customers who rely on sign language to communicate and it’s a first for UK mobile operators. Read on for all the details…

In April we started to provide subtitled information on our YouTube channel’s help content by default and now we’ve been able to extend our support for deaf and hard of hearing customers further still.

We’re using technology from SignVideo to be able to connect you to a Vodafone representative via a live BSL (British Sign Language) interpreter – in real time right on your computer. It’s a really positive step in the right direction, and we hope it’ll make a big difference to those Vodafone customers among the estimated 156,000 BSL users in the UK.

How does it work?

It’s simple: if you need help or handy advice from someone at Vodafone, just head to the accessibility section on vodafone.co.uk here and click on ‘Connect Now’. You’ll need a PC or Mac running either Internet Explorer, Google Chrome or Safari, a web connection with a speed of at least 256kbp/s, and a webcam.

On a PC or Mac, you’ll need to install a one-off plug-in to make everything run smoothly and securely, and then you’re away; just tell the SignVideo BSL interpreter that you’d like to speak to the Vodafone Customer Contact Centre and they’ll take it from there.
