Our Ultrafast* 4G network has gone live in London today, marking the beginning of a roll out that will see us provide coverage using 2G, 3G or 4G services to 98% of the UK population. Thousands of people are already connecting to Vodafone 4G throughout the capital and experiencing the best in mobile entertainment by choosing Sky Sports Mobile TV or Spotify Premium as part of their Vodafone Red 4G-ready plan.

We caught up with Vodafone UK’s CEO, Guy Laurence to find out why he’s convinced that “4G finally has a purpose.”

It’s what you do with it that counts

“We’re really excited about this launch,” Guy explains. “4G is all about fantastic entertainment and giving people great value for money and it’s great to see that message has captured the media’s attention too.

“We’ve kick-started the new season with access to more than 150 hours of live Premier League football from Sky Sports, the US Open and the fifth and final Ashes test for starters, with plenty more action to come on Sky Sports Mobile TV. And we’re changing the 4G tune with our Spotify partnership too, giving people access to 20 million songs from their favourite artists when they’re out and about.”

Vodafone 4G puts the kind of entertainment you love right into your hands, whether that’s #4GSport or #4GMusic. Why?

“People want to be entertained more through their mobile phone,” Guy says. “Whether it’s listening to music when you’re stood in a queue or watching a live match on the bus during your commute to work, we’re using it more and more. The mobile internet makes this possible and 4G will drive that experience forward and then some. With our 4G, we want you to be entertained.

“More than 20,000 people have already signed up to Vodafone Red 4G-ready plans and it’s pretty much a 50/50 split between sports fans and music lovers at the moment. With our Ultrafast 4G network now live, we’re all set for people to make the most of this fantastic entertainment.”

Better plans, better value

The thing is, having a world of songs or sport on demand is nothing without ample data allowance to back that up, which is why Guy’s keen to point out that Vodafone’s Red 4G-ready plans stack up as best in show.

“If you look at some of the other tariffs that are out there, they have very low amounts of data included and that limits what you can do with it. Our plans give you the right amount of data for the entertainment we’re providing and much more besides.

“We know how our customers use their phones and we know how much data they use too. These plans provide several times more than that to maximise their experience. And for good measure, we’re giving new and upgrading customers three months’ unlimited UK data to help them to understand just how much data they use.”

So entertainment and data allowances need to work hand-in-hand to help you to make the most of 4G, but what about the network?

“We’re investing £900 million this year in the network, including £100 million in London alone and that’s not just 4G, but 3G and 2G too,” he says. “On top of that, we’ve spent £802 million to get the best spectrum package, including the 800MHz frequency that’s best for indoor coverage.

“We’re by far the best value and we’re bringing 4G to life as never before.”

“We’re also now hooking up our sites to the great transmission network we got when we acquired Cable & Wireless Worldwide, to ultimately create an ‘Olympic lane’ for our customers where we can guarantee quality.”

“Our 4G offering will change literally every single day as we tune the network and we roll out more sites,” Guy says in closing. “It just gets better from here on in. We’re switching on a new base station every 30 minutes in the initial launch phase, and that’s just part of the work we’re doing to bring indoor coverage to 98 per cent of the UK population over the next couple of years.”
