What do people do once they’ve got a Red 4G plan? Start making the most of it, from what we can see. Today’s an exciting day for us; as we celebrate reaching our first 500,000 Red 4G customers so we thought we’d take this opportunity to share a few stats about how our early adopters are using the network and where it’s heading.

The first thing we’ve seen is a surge in data usage. Our plans come equipped with plenty of data, and that means people have been able to put their 4G connection through its paces up and down the country. In fact, 4G customers are typically using twice as much data as our 3G customers. That’s twice as much streaming, video calling, online banking and shopping.

The volumes of data are pretty impressive. In December last year, for example, 300 Terabytes of data went through our network – so we’re already looking a big numbers with more to come.

Where are we with the roll out?

In the six months since we launched Vodafone 4G in London, we’ve reached 208 cities, towns and districts throughout the UK – only ever starting the roll out in a given area when we know the network will work perfectly. We’re already live in 82 towns and cities with a population of 10,000 or more, and 27 other smaller towns too. We’re also starting to roll out our 4G network in a further 99 towns and cities with a population of more than 10,000 people.

That means 36% of the UK population can now access our ultrafast 4G network.

We’ve rolled out 4G torch in 115 new towns and districts in recent months, and continued to improve 4G coverage in a whole host of our original cities, including Birmingham, Bradford, Coventry, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Sheffield and more than 80 towns and districts in and around London and the South East.

What’s the deal?

Our Red 4G plans include a choice of either Spotify Premium or Sky Sports Mobile TV. That’s more than 20 million tracks from the world’s best known streaming music provider; or the best in live action football from across the Premier League and Championship as well as tennis, cricket, golf and rugby.

This choice of great entertainment comes on top of Vodafone Data Test Drive, offering unlimited UK data for the first three months, then double Vodafone’s standard data allowances and an extra 1GB for the length of your contract, plus unlimited calls and texts.

Are you one of the first half a million people to sign up for a Red 4G plan? Tell us what you use it for in the comments below.
